The memoirs of Edgar Hoyos

Eddy Hoyos (1875-1952), my great-grandfather, lived at Fiume, then in Austria-Hungary and now Rijeka, Croatia. The photo below shows him on the right, with his wife Ilona and son Georry at Hunstanton, UK, in July 1950. I am working on Eddy’s memoirs but they are not ready to share yet.

The family Hoyos, of which we are not representing the chief of the family, did not settle in Fiume, when they had moved away from Spain, but had settled in Stuechsenstein in Austria. It was also pure coincidence, that Zdenko was born in England. His father Eddy was only temporarily , as an Austrian Hungarian diplomat, posted in England. The reason why Eddy become the chief executive of the torpedo factory, as a non engineer, was, because none of the Robert Whitehead children was prepared or able to take over the helm of the factory. After the First World War the Factory was moved to Austria and closed 1928.

Plus- the only reason why our part of the Hoyos clan got in contact with Fiume was that Georg Hoyos married the daughter of Robert Whitehead and worked than in the torpedo factory.

My Father, eldest son of my Grandparents Eddie and Ilona Hoyos was born in England at Shrivenham I believe in 1902. He loved England and was here during the 2nd World War. He and my Mother, Frances were Married in S. Ireland, Eire in 1938. I was born 1943.
The reason the photo of my Father George,Georry was taken in Hunstanton in 1950 was because he and my Mother ran a small hotel there. Apparently we were advised to move to the East coast for my health, so we moved to Hunstanton in 1949 to escape the Midland smog of Nottingham. It was suggested I might not get through another winter unless we did. It seemed to do the trick, I’m now 81 and feel very well. Brother Nick and I had a marvellous childhood there. O’Mama, Ilona used to fly from Austria and stay with us every year.
